The route from ALC to Calpe

Every option leaves the terminal the same way: onto the AP-7 heading north, past the Benidorm turn-offs and the hills above Altea, before dropping down to the coast at Calpe. The motorway is toll-free for its whole length, so nobody adds a toll on top of the fare.

It is one of the longer common runs out of Alicante airport — further than Benidorm, closer than Denia or Jávea — which is exactly the distance where a fixed-price transfer starts to make more financial sense than a metered taxi. Whichever option you choose, allow a little extra on a Friday evening in July or August, when the AP-7 north of Benidorm gets genuinely busy with holiday traffic.

Which one makes sense depends on how many of you there are, how much luggage you're carrying, and whether you'll want a car once you're there.

Taxi from the rank

Straightforward and available around the clock outside arrivals, but on an 80 km run the meter, the airport supplement and any night or Sunday surcharge add up quickly. Fine if you land at a normal hour and want to leave without booking anything.

Private transfer

Booked before you fly, with a driver holding your name in arrivals and the flight tracked in case you're delayed. On a route this length it is usually the cheapest door-to-door option, and free child seats are normally available on request.

ALSA direct coach

A handful of daily departures run straight from the airport to Calpe bus station for €16-19 a head. Reliable and cheap for one or two travellers with light luggage, but you finish at the bus station rather than your hotel door.

TRAM via Benidorm

There is no tram at the airport. Take the C-6 bus into Alicante to Luceros, ride the L1 tram to Benidorm, then change to the L9 towards Calpe. It costs very little but takes over two hours with two changes, so it suits backpackers more than families with suitcases.

Hire car

Desks are inside the terminal, and local suppliers offer full cover with no deposit. Remember Spain drives on the right — useful to know if you're not used to it, since the AP-7 north is a fast, well-signed motorway once you're clear of the airport roundabouts.

Transfer or taxi for this route?

On the shorter airport runs a taxi and a transfer end up costing much the same, and the taxi wins on convenience because there is nothing to arrange. Calpe is different: at 80 km it is far enough that the metered fare, plus the airport and any night supplement, regularly lands above the fixed transfer price of around €82.

A transfer also removes the one real risk on a route this length — arriving late at night to a quiet rank with a long queue, or landing after a delay with nobody sure where the car has gone. A booked driver tracks your flight and waits, the price does not move whatever time you touch down, and for a family with a toddler the child seat is arranged in advance rather than requested on the pavement.

Getting around once you're in Calpe

The town itself is compact, but the wider area is not, and that shapes whether you need a car after the transfer drops you off.

The old town, the marina and the two main beaches — Playa Arenal-Bol and Playa de la Fossa — sit either side of the Peñón de Ifach and are walkable from most central hotels. Where a car earns its keep is beyond that: Moraira and its smaller coves are about 15 minutes south, Altea's old town is a similar distance north, and the quieter calas along the coast road are awkward without your own transport, since local bus links between them are thin.

Parking in summer runs on the blue zone. From roughly June to September, much of the seafront and old town in Calpe is zona azul — paid, ticketed parking by the hour at street machines during the day. Outside those months, and a short walk back from the centre, parking is largely free.
