The route from ALC to Murcia

Murcia lies inland and slightly south-west of Alicante, so the drive turns away from the coast almost as soon as you leave the terminal.

Leaving the airport, the road joins the A-31 towards Elche and then the A-7 Mediterranean motorway into Murcia city via its ring road. There is no railway station at Alicante airport, so the train only makes sense if you first reach Alicante — by taxi or the C-6 bus — and pick up a Murcia-bound service from the city's Renfe station. Once that first leg is added, it is rarely faster or cheaper than the direct ALSA coach, which is why most travellers without a hire car choose the coach or a transfer instead.

Alicante or Murcia's own airport (RMU)?

Murcia has had its own airport since 2019, the Región de Murcia International Airport at Corvera (RMU), roughly 30 km from the city — less than half the distance from Alicante. On paper that makes RMU the obvious choice, but it is worth checking Alicante first.

Alicante-Elche is one of Spain's busiest airports, with far more airlines, routes and daily frequencies than Corvera, especially outside the summer peak — so flights are often cheaper, sometimes by enough to cover the extra 45 km transfer several times over. RMU wins when a direct, well-timed flight is available at a fair price and you want to minimise ground transport, which matters most for late-night arrivals or with young children. Otherwise, compare both airports on your actual travel dates before assuming the closer one is cheaper.

Continuing to Cartagena and the Mar Menor

If Murcia city is only a stop on the way to the coast, budget extra distance and time.

Cartagena and the Mar Menor resorts — La Manga, Los Alcázares, Santiago de la Ribera — sit a further 50 km beyond Murcia, so the total run from Alicante airport is around 125 km and 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by road. A private transfer can be booked straight through to Cartagena or the Mar Menor without stopping in the city, at a higher fixed price than the €78 Murcia fare; a rank taxi does the same trip on the meter but is a long way to negotiate on arrival.
